Comments: A great little inspiration of a book. This guy decides to ride across the country with his two boys, 5 and 7 in tow -- One on a one-wheel trail-a-bike, and one in a Burley behind that. It was a 14' long rig that added an extra 250 lbs of weight to his ride.

Anyhow, Joe here rides from Portland to DC from July 1 to Aug 31 of 2006 (Katrina Year) and doesn't even go in a straight line. He ends up with 4000+ miles and sometimes up to 12 hours a day in the saddle. His boys hold up very well and the descriptions of some of the people met and places visited are inspiring. I re-read the Yellowstone section a couple of times. Maybe I can get my family to bicycle camp Yellowstone, but the idea of my 10-year-old daughter on a pink bike facing down a buffalo (or worse) at 25 yards is a bit unnerving.

Good book, though. The author describes well (though sometimes he gets on a bit of an incoherent descriptive roll), and inspires immensely. I'd like to take a bike ride in no general direction with nothing but a cell phone and a credit card. I'd like to see how far I could get.
