Comments: Well . . .

This is a truly beautiful marathon course. It begins at Riverfront Park and heads immediately west into a neighborhood of century-old mansions overlooking the falls. Then it crosses the river on a bridge just north of I-90 and heads to, and loops around Spokane Falls Community College. I had never been there and was surprised to find that it used be a military post and most of the buildings and grounds are still pristine. Then you wind your way along bike paths and park roads of Riverside State Park (hardly a building in sight) for another 8 miles to the 7 mile bridge where you cross to the north side of the river. The return trip starts on a secluded road that runs between beautiful/expensive houses and grassy/willow-treed riverfront. Eventually you outrun the houses and are cruising along a road on a terrace that overlooks the park that you had been running through on the other side. Things rise gradually until Headache/Heartbrake/Doomsday Hill (of Bloomsday fame) at mile 22. It's 6.5% for 7/10 of a mile. Following that, the last 3 miles are remarkable only for their lack of scenery (except for the valley in the distance). You're running through what used to be an industial neighborhood, and what will eventually be VERY expensive housing, but currently looks like a moonscape.

Yes it is a beautifully scenic course, BUT . . . it's a very difficult course -- the most difficult I've ever run (I've only run 8 different courses). There are hills of every shape and size on the first half. Do yourself a favor and take it 30 sec per mile slower than normal until 7-mile bridge (which is at mile 14, go figure). It's all downhill and downriver to there, and since there is no elevation chart on the web site, I will have to guess it's 300 feet lower than the start, but the total elevation gain/loss must be nearer 1500 ft. Those may be over-estimates, but it sure seemed like that. The second half climbs back up, including that killer, long, steep doomsday hill. I walked it and was passed by three people. I re-passed all three of them in the first 300 yards after the top. It's steep.

Since I value beauty and toughness in a marathon course more than ease and flatness, I rated this course very highly. You may not.

P.S. I'd say you should probably add 10 to 12 minutes to your normal marathon time on this one, so it's not a race to PR on.
