What can I say. The movie follows the book so religiously that I didn't feel the book was significantly better. Though I am prejudiced by having seen the movie often and recently. There are some few details that are hard to gather by watching the movie, and watching it after the book with my family, I found myself explaining certain details that they had missed. The movie does cover them, but they are slight, and easy to miss. Plus Humphrey Bogart plays the part with slightly more humor and it comes off quite well.

The author was a Pinkerton agent, and even worked in Spokane for a while. His time as a detective is the foundation for his literary work. He eventually became a socialist and had a hard time of it. Gotta read the biography in the book again. Very interesting author.
