Bloomsday 2005

2005 Bloomsday Report, by Carie S

Summary: 7.46-mile course – 39,941 Bloomies completed the race, up 246 from last year; Start 9am; Weather 55 degrees & clear.
My Time was: Carie Saunders 1:26
Traditions: People tossed their warmup clothes up into the trees that line the streets downtown. The news chopper hovered overhead at the start. The Doomsday Vulture was at the top of Doomsday Hill to high-five (Apparently he has to wear shin guards now because kids kick him).
Wacky Attire - Superman, The Flash, and Captain America; Plastic buttocks; an 80-year-old couple in wedding attire - they both had tin cans dangling behind them; Funny t-shirts: Nike swoosh with "Just Skip It"; on teenager: "Don't Touch Me"; and "Only YOU Can Prevent Narcissism."
Nice People: A wheelchair racer was struggling up Doomsday Hill, inch by inch - and there were literally dozens of people slowly walking alongside him offering encouragement.
Sign at mile 6: "Don't Give Up - You Can Do it!" On the back: "You Look Fabulous!"
The lilacs really smelled good in the park after finishing as you're laying back on the grass exhausted.
Downside: Locally "talented" garage bands were not.
Old Wedding Couple:

Bloomsday T-Shirt: Only finishers get this.
