A Local Hash, 20 Oct 2006 (a Friday night)

Never attended a hash before. Sheesh, they got a lot of rules, games and songs. Well, at least there's beer. Here's a link to the Moscow Hash House Harriers, who put on this event.
Waiting: Remember to be 15 minutes late next time.

Boob Crossing?: That's not the correct name for this. But it means that this is a crossroad and that the women in the group must check out the available routes to find the correct one. Maybe I better back up. The hash is usually led by a "hare" that leaves these flower trail markings (arrows, lines, etc.) for the rest to follow. Hashers yell "On On" or "On Right" when they see lines or arrows marking the trail. In the darkness (or in the light) this aids other runners to find the trail. At a cross, the group must find the true trail from the available choices (2 or 3 branches). You know its the true trail if there are at least 3 valid marks (arrows). Three squiggly lines denotes the end of a false trail. So here we have a crossroad and only women are supposed to search for the true trail. Everybody else waits at the "X".

Turtle Crossing: I'm told this is a turtle, signifying that the entire group must wait here until the slowest runner arrives before looking for the true trail. Evidently, the hare may be caught by the other runners. I guess this a bad thing, but I'm not sure what the penalty is. The turtle (and other crossings) can be used by the hare to slow the pack.

Beer Near: Always a welcome sign, and intellible to many cultures. Or is that "BEEF"?

Beer Here: Yay! Down it quick and let's get running. Lots of belching in the first half mile after the beer.

On Beer!: The end of the course. Just 2.5 miles tonight, because they expected some newby runners. Sometimes with an experienced crew they go 6 miles.

John's Alley: Now we really start drinking. There are many, many rules, like "no wearing a race shirt", and "don't be a front runner, or overachiever", or "don't talk about races". Violators of rules must drink from a bedpan while the group sings.
